2014 WWGP Entry - Josh Neilson from Southern Underground Productions on Vimeo.
2013 was a great year of kayaking for me. I often get asked what is my favorite river I have paddled and its such a tough question. We often break it down to best single day and best multi day run and I experienced both of these in one season. The Wainui River in NZ immediately took first spot on the single day runs after an epic day out at optimal flows. A month later in California we got on the seldom run North Fork of the San Joaquin and that topped out the best multi day run for me. The season didn't stop there though. Norway was next and an epic time was had by all! First descents and the biggest slide I have ever run in ...more
Stookesberry’s Top 10- Best Big Water on the planet
Disclaimer – This could be a very contentious subject because that
little creek in your back yard could make an epic 3 meter wave with the
right 100 year flood conditions. So let me apply some criteria to help
narrow down the nearly ubiquitous potential for big voluminous flow to
just a few select rivers, or 10 to be exact. First I tried to think
about rivers that would still be considered big water even at there
lower flows. So I am sad to say that pretty much eliminates everything
in the Continental US short of the Grand Canyon of the Colorado. But
unfortunately both it and and Cataract canyon fail to make my list do to
a lack of the truely massive rapids. Thus the order of Ranking itself
is really based on big runnable rapids even though many times I may
actually portage those rapids. As many of you are well aware I also
don’t mind big heinous portages. But for the sake of kayaking purity, I
have used that as a detractor here instead of an attribute. As always I
appreciate your comments and amendments to my top 10 lists especially
when it is an ...more

Blue River, Greenland. A Paradise For Kayak Lovers
Petermann Glacier is the largest floating glacier in the Northern
Hemisphere, located in Northwest Greenland. It connects the Greenland
ice sheet to the Arctic Ocean. Petermann Glacier consists of
approximately 500 square miles of ice in the middle and about 30-80 on
the edge. In August 2010, a huge iceberg broke off from the floating
part of Petermann Glacier reducing its volume by 10% and its area by
about 25%. Another important concern in recent years has become the
glacier’s melting.
In cooperation with the Greenpeace an expedition of three researchers
spent three months in Greenland exploring Petermann Glacier ant its
changes due to the global warming. They found a beautiful river created
as a result of glacier’s melting. Evidently, about 80% of the Peterman
glacier’s mass is melted water. This Petermann glacier’s melting river
was named Blue River and it attracts a great number of ...more

Kayak Outfitting Guide
From the very first moment you sit in a boat you start to get “a feel
for it”, how it fits and possibly even how it may perform. As beginners
we start off in boats that may be used by many different size paddlers,
which results in cockpits being kept clutter free. Loose, comfortable
boats feel good on flat water, but they can make leaning and bracing
difficult. Once the boat is padded to provide a close, body-hugging fit
that still allows for quick and easy water exits, performance can
dramatically improve.
This same rule applies to all levels of kayakers, whether they’re
paddling easy whitewater, big water runs or creeks. Customised
outfitting helps transfer every trace in the river’s current through the
kayak’s hull to your body, helping you ...more

2013 - it's a wrap!
Well the 2013 season for California has officially been over for a
few weeks now. As the last of the damn releases dries up and we are left
biding our time on the South Fork of the American, waiting for the
winter rain to come to replenish the foothill rivers and charge the
Sierra with enough snow to provide all spring and summer long.
Some years the rains can start in October... more often however it is December before the first substantial storms roll through. Here we are, halfway through December and still waiting... and hoping, but this does allow me to reflect on the past season without any distraction of planning the current week's adventure.
Last season started in November with enough rain to get 3 weeks of the South Yuba in before December even rolled in. Then we had a massive storm that sent local citizens scurring and local boats running for the G-wave on the American. G-wave only goes when the American just below the North and Middle forks has 25,000 cfs. This day, we watched as 25,000 cfs came and went and the water peaked closer to 50,000. The season continued with early season Bald Rock runs followed by ...more

Maui Death Raises Questions About Spike in Hawaiian Shark Attacks
A shark killed a fisherman off the Maui coast on
Monday, Maui County Ocean Safety officials reported, when it bit his
foot, which he had dangled over the side of his kayak.
The
attack was the eighth near Maui and the thirteenth in Hawaiian waters
this year—more than triple the 20-year average of about four unprovoked
shark incidents each year.
Patrick
Briney, the fisherman, was Hawaii's second shark attack fatality this
year, following an August attack on a German snorkeler. Prior to 2013
there hadn't been a single fatal shark attack in Hawaii since 2004.
This
year's attacks, on top of ten Hawaiian attacks last year, have people
asking whether there's been a recent statistical anomaly or whether more
shark attacks are Hawaii's new normal.
Yannis Papastamatiou, a marine biologist at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland, said it's ...more

Posted by jkteam, 24/11/2013
Last month I was able to head off into the Africian wilderness and test out my new Karma creek boat. We loaded up the boats and caught a flight into Uganda home of the Nile River.
The Nile River is one of the holy grails of kayaking. It’s home to some of the Worlds best playboating but is slowly getting dammed to fuel Africas massive need for energy. It drains the massive lake Victoria in Uganda in the small town of Jinja before beginning it’s epic journey twisting and turning its way down through a bunch countries before flowing into the ocean.
5 years ago I was here at NRE and able to experience Silverback and the upper section before the dam flooded it out and made way for a massive lake. The river has intrigued me since and I’ve always wanted to explore the lower sections of it after the ...more
