A 42-year-old man from the east side of the state left from the Holland pier and was about two miles out during the afternoon hours when the fog rolled in, causing him to become disoriented.
Fortunately, the man had a cell phone and was wearing a life jacket. He was also prepared with a whistle, which helped the responding deputy find him through the fog.
Fellow kayakers and boaters can take note of a handful of lessons from the rescue, Ottawa County sheriff's authorities said. One major word of advice for anyone going out on the water: check the forecast.
