On the Trail is a periodic Pocono Outdoors
feature that allows me to share my discoveries as I hike along the many
wonderful trails throughout the Poconos. This featured trail was not
traveled by foot but by kayak, at an extraordinary place called Pecks
Pond, where my aquatic adventure discovered mysterious sunken sand
circles, bobbing bobbers, riveting rhizomes, a fragrant waterbed and a
furry submarine.
Driving along Route 402 in
Porter Township, Pike County, one cannot help but notice the expansive
wetland dotted with gnarled tree stumps and thick vegetation called
Pecks Pond.
Approximately 315 acres with 564 acres of
adjoining wetlands, Pecks Pond is one of the largest glacial bogs in the
state. To the ardent boater and recreational waterways enthusiast,
Pecks Pond might not be the best place to play, but to a duck, fish or
naturalist with a small kayak, it's an aquatic heaven.
Pecks
Pond does offer a limited amount of open water to paddle upon, however,
its average depth is only 3 feet, so Pecks Pond is suited for aquatic
plants and wildlife.
Pecks Pond is practically
surrounded by Bureau of Forestry land within Delaware State Forest, and
